Speaker - Anna Norén, M.Sc. (Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden)
Picture of author Anna Norén

Anna Norén is a bioinformatician in the Department of Clinical Microbiology at Karolinska University Hospital. She received her M.Sc. in Biotechnology from Chalmers University of Technology where her master thesis studied the population structure of enterotoxigenic E. coli and the role of host barriers on virulence gene acquisition. Anna has previous experience of working with bacteria in clinical laboratory samples at Karolinska University Hospital. Since joining as a bioinformatician in 2025, her work has focused on viral typing pipelines and clinical metagenomics. She is also expanding her expertise into fungal genomics through ITS-based metagenomic analysis.

Speaker - Elin Loo, MD, PhD-student (Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden)

Elin Loo completed medical studies at University of Oslo in 2012. After graduation, she worked in emergency medicine and completed internship training at Danderyds Hospital to become a licensed physician in 2016, followed by residency training in Clinical Microbiology between 2017-2022 at Karolinska University Hospital.

She is currently medically responsible for 16S rDNA sequencing, as well as for wound and deep tissue culture diagnostics, at Karolinska University Hospital. She is parallelly pursuing a PhD in the research group of Christian Giske, focusing on the clinical application of bacteriophages against Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections.

Course Facilitator - Dr. Lili Andersson-Li (Karolinska Institutet, Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden)

Lili completed her master’s studies analyzing Sanger sequencing data at Lanzhou University in China, earned her PhD at the Department of Genetics and Genomics at Uppsala University, and thereafter held various research positions at Uppsala University and Karolinska Institute. She has a wide range of experience working with large genetic datasets, including genomic, transcriptomic, and epigenetic data, as well as applying statistical methods, machine learning, and deep learning. She is experienced in Linux-based environments and programming languages such as Python, R. As a Nextflow Ambassador, she has developed the gms/metaval pipeline and is one of the main developers of nf-core/taxprofiler. Additionally, she is involved in the development of a viral genotyping pipeline.

Course facilitator – Lina Guerra Blomqvist, PhD, MSc (Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden)

Lina Guerra Blomqvist is a molecular biologist at the Clinical Microbiology department at Karolinska University Hospital. She obtained her PhD in Medical biology in 2009 at the Karolinska Institute for Dr. Teresa Frisan. Her doctoral research focused on the bacterial cytolethal distending toxins and its role on the eukaryotic cell cyle. Lina has previous experience of working with molecular diagnostics and 16S/ITS rRNA sequencing with clinical laboratory samples at Karolinska University Hospital. As a molecular biologist since 2024, her work has focused on implementing the 16S rRNA sequencing on the Oxford Nanopore platform.

Speaker - Samuel Lampa, PhD, MSc (Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden)

Samuel Lampa is a bioinformatician at the clinical microbiology department at Karolinska University Hospital. He obtained his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Bioinformatics in 2018 in Uppsala with Dr. Ola Spjuth. His doctoral research focused on developing tools for and performing large-scale computing to train machine learning models for predicting properties of drug compounds. The research resulted in two novel pipeline tools which have been used at organizations like Pfizer, GSK (SciLuigi) and Nasa (SciPipe). After a few years as a data scientist in industry, he pivoted into genomics and has been at Karolinska University Hospital since 2023 where his work has focused primarily on development of new pipelines for bacterial typing and resistance profiling.

Course facilitator - Sofia Stamouli, M.Sc. (Karolinska Institutet, Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden)
Sofia Stamouli is a bioinformatician in the Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology and affiliated in the Department of Clinical Microbiology at Karolinska University Hospital. She received her M.Sc. in Bioinformatics from Uppsala University. Since joining as a bioinformatician in 2021, her work has focused on developing bioinformatics pipelines for clinical metagenomics and SARS-CoV-2 data analysis within the nf-core framework.
