  Objectives

  After completing this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the use approaches from social and behavioural science, like the 5Cs Model, to diagnose and overcome barriers to vaccination.
  • Understand the multifactorial reasons for delaying or refusing vaccinations, including structural and environment barriers, as well as questions about vaccine safety and effectiveness, and trust issues.
  • Enumerate tailored strategies and interventions to overcome barriers to vaccination and improve vaccination acceptance and uptake in populations with sub-optimal coverage rates.

  Summary of the content

  This presentation is part of a thematic session held at ESCAIDE 2025, titled ‘Diagnosing barriers to vaccination’. Closing immunisation gaps and improving sub-optimal vaccination coverage in all population groups requires a comprehensive approach, integrating both epidemiological and behavioural data. Key factors include analysis of epidemiological trends, such as vaccination coverage by age, gender, education level and geographical location; and understanding social and behavioural drivers, including barriers and facilitators that influence vaccination decisions, whether people accept, delay or refuse vaccination.
