How did a widespread decline in vultures in India impact human health?

In an article published in 2024, two researchers found out that the wide use of diclofenac by cattle breeders led to a sharp collapse in the vulture population in the 1990s.
Having less vultures carrying out removal of carcasses attracted feral dogs carrying rabies and other diseases in areas that were once highly suitable for vultures to breed.

The authors estimated that, between 2000 and 2005, the loss of vultures caused an additional 100,000 human deaths per year, resulting in USD 69.4 billion per year in mortality damages.
