  This presentation is part of a plenary session held at ESCAIDE 2024, titled "Surveillance of infectious diseases: how can we better tell what's going on". In this presentation, the speaker discusses the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in improving Healthcare-Associated Infection (HAI) surveillance and prevention, highlighting its benefits in automating surveillance tasks, predicting patient risk for HAIs, and potentially improving outbreak management. It addresses challenges faced in implementing AI, emphasising the critical need for high-quality, complete data and addressing the issue of model transparency (the "black box" problem). The impact of poor electronic record quality leading to innovative approaches is explored, showing how methods like Natural Language Processing (NLP) applied to hospital discharge letters can effectively identify infections like Surgical Site Infections (SSIs). Additionally, the presentation covers the use of Explainable AI (XAI) to increase model transparency and build trust, underscoring the importance of clean data for reliable results.
