This instructor-led workshop back-to-back ESCAIDE introduces participants to key terms and concepts of evidence based public health (EBPH) and evidence informed decision-making (EIDM). It also provides an introduction to evidence synthesis and systematic reviews as core pillars of evidence-based practice. The workshop consists of a mix of lectures and exercises and encourages interaction and active involvement. Participants are encouraged to share their own experience with evidence reviews and development of evidence-based scientific advice. The practical examples used during the course are mainly taken from the area of ECDC’s remit, i.e. infectious disease epidemiology, prevention and control.

Dates and duration:  Tuesday 18 November 2025, 09:00-17:00 CET.

Audience: The training is offered to ESCAIDE attendees and especially recommended to experts involved in the development and provision of public health risk assessments, and guidelines/guidance documents. The training is targeted at beginners in the field of evidence-based practice, and prior knowledge in this field is not needed. However, basic knowledge in epidemiology (e.g. different study designs) has proven to be helpful to fully benefit from the workshop.

Objectives: After completing this training, the participants should be able to:

• Understand key terms and concepts for evidence-informed and evidence-based decision-making, with an emphasis on evidence synthesis.
• Recognize the importance of conducting systematic reviews and their relevance to evidence-based practices in infectious disease epidemiology, prevention and control.
